I used to suffer greatly from anxiety—“panic attacks”—with all of their associated symptoms. My heart pounded, my mind raced with all the worst thoughts; it was a nightmare. Those who suffer from anxiety will surely understand.
I tried different deep-breathing exercises over the years, but they did not help much. I read about and then tried all the calming exercises recommended by the latest mental health gurus, and while these may work for some people, they did not work for me.
After many unsuccessful techniques, I found something that did work for me. It not only brought me down from my panic episodes; it also worked when I recommended it to my patients who were depressed as well. And it couldn’t be simpler: two wet, cold, wrung-out, and folded washcloths. You put one around the back of your neck and one on your forehead, covering your eyes, and then lie down. It is unbelievably soothing! Yes, drops of water do drip down your neck, getting your shirt and pillow a little wet, but that’s a small price to pay for the true calm you’ll feel. After about twenty minutes, when the washcloths get too dry, run them under the cold water again, wring them out (not all the way), and place them again on your forehead over your eyes and around the back of your neck and lie down.
High anxiety is like a high fever: you need to bring it down. While this idea of washcloths may sound “all wet,” it’s not. Sometimes the simplest home remedies are the ones that do the trick. Give it a try. I think you will enjoy the peaceful feeling it brings.
